What are the causes of the phenomenon of “M-shaped society” and the unequal distribution of resources? Are disappearing job opportunities and stagnant wages the inevitable result of globalisation? What responsibilities do governments and financial groups have? Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel laureate in economic sciences and one of the most important economists of our time, will share his view on these questions in his talk “The Price of Inequality” to be held on 28 March at the University of Macau (UM). In his talk Prof. Stiglitz will discuss the causes and consequences of—and remedies for—inequality, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation and a free market system.

Prof. Stiglitz’s major research interests include globalisation and free markets. He is the author of several best-selling books, including Freefall, Globalization and Its Discontents, and Making Globalization Work. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001 for his analyses of markets with asymmetric information. In 2011, Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He received an honorary doctorate in social sciences from UM in 2002, and afterwards he gave a talk on the lessons of Asian financial crisis at UM, which was his first public talk in Asia after receiving the Nobel Prize.

Prof. Stiglitz is the chair of the Commission of Experts of the President of the United Nation General Assembly on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System. He is a professor at Columbia University, where he is also the founder and co-president of the university’s Initiative for Policy Dialogue. He was former chief economist of the World Bank, and he has taught at several top universities, including Princeton, Stanford, and MIT.

The talk will take place on Friday 28 March in the Cultural Centre on the current campus from 10:00am to 11: 30am. It will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Putonghua. Advance registration is required due to limited seating. Those interested should complete online registration at https://isw.umac.mo/evm/register/stiglitz.
