The University of Macau (UM) has nurtured 24 PhD graduates since the founding of the laboratory in microelectronics research. Many of them have been employed by leading companies and institutes in the field. Recently, Arshad Hussain, a PhD candidate from the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (AMS-VLSI Lab), has completed his doctoral oral defense, with external examiners unanimously praising his PhD dissertation for reaching world-class standards. Hussain was supervised by Prof U Seng-Pan and Prof Sin Sai-Weng.

Titled ‘High-Resolution Passive and Active-Passive Switched-Capacitor Delta-Sigma Modulator Design Techniques in Nanoscale CMOS’, Hussain’s thesis has already led to one IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) SCI journal paper and two IEEE conference papers.

Only renowned professors and experts in the area of microelectronics are invited to serve as external committee members for the PhD oral defenses at AMS-VLSI Lab. Prof Geng Li, vice dean of the School of Microelectronics at Xi’an Jiaotong University, was an external member of the examination committee for Hussain’s oral defense. Geng was a member of the Technical Program Committee of the Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (ASSCC) from 2010 to 2016.

UM’s postgraduate students in microelectronics research have published a total of 190 papers in prestigious journals and 304 papers at conferences, including top IEEE journals and conferences such as the Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC), Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems (T-VLSI), the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC), the Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC), and the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS).

Besides academic careers at UM as professors, associate professors, assistant professors and UM Macao Fellow, graduates of the AMS-VLSI Lab have been employed by leading companies and institutes in the field, such as Synopsys, Qualcomm in the United States, Mediatek in Singapore, Silicon Labs, Marvell Technology Group, STMicroelectronics, Huawei, Solomon Systech, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
