The University of Macau (UM) once again won the most prizes at the Macao Science and Technology Awards. Of the 14 prizes presented at the award ceremony held on 8 October, UM scholars won all the prizes in the Technological Invention Award category, as well as two second prizes and two third prizes in the Natural Science Award category, becoming the first institution in Macao to win the most prizes at the award twice in a row.

 

About 1,000 distinguished guests attended the award ceremony, including officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Macao government departments, higher education institutions, research institutions, science and technology associations, and local secondary schools. The awards were presented by Chui Sai On, chief executive of the Macao SAR; Yao Jian, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Li Meng, vice minister of science and technology of China; Feng Tie, vice commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Macao SAR; Lau Si Io, secretary for transport and public works of the Macao SAR; Yeung Tsun Man, representative of the award evaluation committee; and Ma Chi Ngai, chair of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT).

 

The evaluation committee noted that UM has reached international level in research in the fields of Chinese medicine and microelectronics, with some very good results in environmental protection research as well. This is the second time UM has won the most prizes at the award. At the First Macao Science and Technology Awards held in 2012, UM won nine prizes.
