Lately the Inauguration Conference of the Asian Criminological Society (ACS) was held at the University of Macau (UM). The topic of this year was “Asian Criminology in a Global Context—Challenges and Prospects.” The conference passed the Constitution of ACS and elected the first group of officers for its leading organs. UM Prof. Liu Jianhong from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities was elected President of ACS.

Internationally, there are American Society of Criminology (ASC) in North America and European Society of Criminology in Europe. In Asia, major countries have also established their respective criminological societies and academic journals within each nation/region. A consensus on the importance of establishing the Asian Criminological Society was reached a long time ago by scholars from around the world. This Conference has finally made that dream come true. More than 50 representatives from14 major Asian countries and regions such as India, Pakistan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and China, attended the Conference and witnessed the foundation of ACS. Core members of ACS are all leading scholars or practitioners in the fields of criminology and criminal justice who represent the highest standards in the fields in their respective countries. For example, Prof. John Braithwaite, Chairperson of the General Assembly of ACS, is the winner of the first Stockholm Prize which is considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in the field of criminology. His theory led the direction of Western criminal justice reform in the past 20 years, and he is considered the “Father of Restorative Justice”. Vice President of ACS Prof. Peter Grabosky is the Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council Center of Excellence in Policing and Security and is also the winner of the Sellin-Glueck Prize, the highest prize of ASC.
