In recent years, the University of Macau (UM) is gaining momentum in the development of scientific research projects, with steadily increasing research strength, attainment of landmark research achievements in various fields, and academic staff’s receipt of numerous international awards and honors, reflecting widespread recognition of the University’s research achievements. Lately, UM received yet another piece of good news-- The new Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Prof. Philip Chen Chun-Lung has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his academic accomplishments and outstanding contributions in the field of engineering science.

Founded in 1848, AAAS includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals. It is the largest general scientific society in the world, with 140,000 members from around the world. This year, only 531 individuals with outstanding achievements were elected Fellows. AAAS notes in the congratulation letter to Prof. Chen that the Steering Groups were particularly impressed with Prof. Chen’s “distinguished contributions to research on integrated automated systems design and planning, and for leadership and service to professional organizations and engineering education.”

Prof. Chen is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and specializes in engineering research. Key areas of his research include theoretical development in computational intelligence, intelligent systems, robotics and manufacturing automation, networking, diagnosis and prognosis, and life prediction and life-extending control. He once served as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas, San Antonio, visiting research scientist at the Materials Directorate, US Air Force Wright Lab, and research faculty fellow for NASA Glenn Research Center. In 2008 he received the “Outstanding Contribution Award” from the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society.

Science, a magazine published by AAAS, is recognized as the best international science magazine with a readership of one million. The annual meeting of AAAS is also the world’s largest comprehensive scientific meeting that brings together scientists from around the world to discuss the latest trends of scientific and technological developments.
