UM team won a second prize at the 2009 Innovate Asia which was attended by more than 600 teams. Other universities that won second prizes include Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

The prize-winning project “Instantaneous Frequency Analyzer Based on HHT” was jointly designed by UM FST student Wang Lei and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJU) students Li Cheng and Zhao Yunting under the guidance of UM FST Associate Prof. Vai Mang I and BJU Associate Prof. Ding Xiaoming.

HHT (Hilbert-Huang Transform) is a novel adaptive signal processing technology and can be extensively applied in various fields such as voice signal processing, machine health monitoring, biomedical engineering, architecture, and financial data analysis, etc. Wang Lei says due to the relative novelty of the computing method and the huge volume of the data to be processed, real-time application could not be realized even on a sophisticated PC. And at present there are no dedicated signal processing chips that can realize HHT. So they decided to develop FPGA-based HHT hardware and then, based on that, successfully developed the prize-winning “Instantaneous Frequency Analyzer Based on HHT”. Prof. Vai Mang I says this Nios II-based analyzer is in line with the future trend. It demonstrates the feasibility and powerful functions of real-time HHT and therefore has enormous market potential.

The 1st Innovate Asia was held six years ago. A top competition in FPGA design in the Asia-Pacific Region, it aims to increase students’ interest in FPGA design, improve their design skills, and encourage creative ideas. Winning prizes at this competition is considered as a prestigious honor for students majoring in electrical engineering, science and engineering, and information. After several rounds of fierce competition against 625 strong teams from Mainland universities, such as Tsinghua University, Peking University and Wuhan University, that lasted half a year, UM team entered the final round with 27 other teams and won a second prize.
