According to the ISI Web of Science (WOS) statistics on journal papers, the citation frequency of University of Macau’s (UM) research papers continues to increase substantially. For many years, UM has ranked No. 1 in Macao in terms of the citation frequency of its research papers as well as the quantity of published papers, reflecting increasing international recognition of its research status.

Citation frequency has all along been considered by the international academic circle as an important index that measures the value, influence and originality of a published paper. Until now, a total of 619 papers by UM scholars have been included in WOS, with the citation frequency exceeding 2,600. According to WOS statistics, the citation frequency of UM’s papers shows a continuous upward trend in recent years. In 2008, UM’s papers were cited for more than 600 times, more than a double for the citation frequency in 2007, a proof that not only has UM made a quantum leap in research quality, but also UM scholars are enjoying an ever-increasing status in the international academic circle.

Since launching the Research Funding Programme in 1993, UM has been actively collaborating with scientific research institutions both at home and abroad. It is committed to advancing the development of Macao’s scientific research with the funding of numerous organizations including Macau Foundation and The Science and Technology Development Fund. Through years of efforts, UM scholars have published papers in more than 100 types of international referred academic journals, with numerous papers winning outstanding paper awards at large-scale international conferences. These achievements are a testament to UM’s constant pursuit of research excellence and innovation.

Of around 2,000 types of journals applying for inclusion every year, only 10-12% of them will be included in ISI through a rigorous evaluation process, making WOS the most authoritative database in terms of international journal evaluation. Moreover, WOS provides data on “single article” citation frequency to enable users to know the citation frequency of each article as well as references used by each article. Now WOS contains 8,700 types of journals covering 230 subjects, including Science and Technology, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
