The 26th annual meeting of the Association of Universities of Portuguese Language (AULP) was held in Dili, East Timor. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Tam Chon Weng and University of Macau (UM) Rector Wei Zhao attended the closing ceremony.

In his speech delivered in Portuguese, Rector Zhao stressed that UM as the president of the AULP would continue to promote communication among AULP members and the development of all Portuguese-speaking universities..

Secretary Tam said in his speech that the Portuguese language and cultural diversity are what make Macao unique. He expressed his hope that AULP members would work together to promote cross-cultural communication and increase collaboration in scientific research and other areas. He noted that Macao would continue to promote cross-cultural communication through the medium of the Portuguese language, and would also continue to increase collaboration in the field of higher education, between Macao on the one hand, and Portuguese-speaking countries and mainland China on the other.

Secretary Tam also stressed that Macao’s effort to promote collaboration in Portuguese scientific research is not only in line with the SAR government’s policies and goals, but also in line with the Chinese government’s ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, as increasing collaboration with Portuguese-speaking countries, especially in the area of the Portuguese language, is part of the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative.

During the ceremony, UM and the Universidade de Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on academic collaboration and exchange.

UM was elected president of the AULP for a three-year term (2014-2017) at the association’s 24th annual meeting. Composed of more than 140 universities and other research and educational institutions in CPLP countries and Macao, the AULP is dedicated to promoting communication among its members as well as the development of education and the Portuguese language worldwide.
