UM follows up on students’ illness

From 9 March to 11 March, 13 University of Macau students experienced diarrhea and vomiting. The students are now recovering after receiving treatment in the Medical Centre on the campus. They are now in stable condition, with no need for hospital visits. UM took a series of actions immediately after the incident to ensure food and environmental hygiene in the canteens of the residential colleges.

Over the past three days, 13 students visited the university’s Medical Centre after experiencing diarrhea and vomiting, with 5 on the first day, 6 on the second day, and 2 on the third day. The affected students felt ill after eating food served by two residential colleges’ shared kitchen at different times. The kitchen serves three meals for the 1,000 students living in the two colleges every day.

After the incident, the university immediately notified the Health Bureau. It is now closely following the health condition of the affected students and has cleaned and disinfected the affected students’ bathrooms. The university’s Office of Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs has collected food samples for testing, as well as stool samples from affected students at the request of the Health Bureau. The colleges’ food supplier has also taken actions, including stepping up disinfection. It will suspend its service tomorrow (12 March) to conduct thorough professional cleaning.
