UM celebrates its Silver Jubilee

 

Year 2006 is the 25th Anniversary of the University of Macau (UM). The University has specially made “Flying Higher on Silvery Wings” the theme of its Silver Jubilee. A series of celebration activities will follow the Launch Ceremony.

To celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the University of Macau, a Launch Ceremony of the 25th Anniversary Celebration will be held on 29 April (Saturday). Ho Hau Wah, the Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region, and Chui Sai On, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, have been invited to preside over the ceremony. In addition to the Launch Ceremony, the East Asia Hall, Silver Jubilee Building as well as Tin Ka Ping Institute of Educational Research of UM will also be inaugurated on the same day. People from all walks of life will be invited to attend. After the ceremony and all the inaugurations, a Round-campus Run Competition and Happy Walk will take place, enabling staff, students and alumni to get involved in the Silver Jubilee celebration.

The Launch Ceremony of the 25th Anniversary Celebration will raise the curtain of a series of Silver Jubilee celebration activities of UM, including various important international academic conferences and seminars. On 28 September, the 25th Anniversary stamps will be issued. In October, there will be a concert, a 25th Anniversary celebration and a gala dinner. Moreover, UM will publish an album for celebrating its Silver Jubilee.

UM has become a comprehensive university, with an internationalized cadre of faculty members. There are 358 full-time teachers, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers. There are over 6,000 students, among which more than 4,000 are bachelor students while over 1,000 are postgraduate students (including Master’s and PhD candidates). UM is a university with the greatest number of academic programmes in Macao, covering more than 30 specializations in business administration, education, science and technology, social sciences and humanities and law. It is actively promoting academic research. Its research results in various aspects have already reached international standards. Academic papers have been published in nearly 100 international refereed journals in the world. The research level of some of the papers has gained world-wide prominence. Such performance is really encouraging. Until now, UM has already had student exchange programmes with more than 40 universities in Europe, the US, the Mainland of China, Hong Kong, Japan and so on. Through a series of academic exchange activities, UM students can have the chance to get on with students of different nationalities, broadening their horizons and enriching their campus life.

During the past 25 years, UM has trained, for Macao and for regions inside and outside the country, about 17,000 graduates. There are many elites among its alumni. They work in different industries, making contributions to the society.

Approaching its 25th Anniversary, UM will continue to strive for excellence in terms of education and academic research, dedicating itself to serving the community.
