The University of Macau (UM) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recently invited four veteran engineers from various fields to give talks on the career prospects of electrical and computer engineers and share their career experiences with secondary school students, as part of a series of science popularisation activities.

The four speakers are Pan Sio, curator of the Macao Science Center; Dr Michael Choi, chairman and chief executive officer of MTEL Telecommunication Company Limited; Frank Wong, managing director of Rohde & Schwarz Hong Kong Limited (RSHK); and Bernie Leong, chairman of the Executive Committee of Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM).

Sio shared with the students his career experiences after graduating from UM’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, including his experiences in operating large-scale facilities. Choi and Leong discussed the career prospects of engineering graduates in Macao, particularly in the field of telecommunications engineering and electrical power engineering. Wong encouraged the students to broaden their horizons and look for opportunities to work with professionals from around the world, in order to adapt to the trend of globalisation. The speakers also shared their life experiences and offered advice on career planning. In addition, representatives of the department provided some information about the department’s scholarships, internship programmes, and the industrial joint laboratory.

The four talks attracted a total of 240 teachers and students from more than ten secondary schools, university students, and faculty members. Some students said that the event gave them an opportunity to talk to practitioners in the engineering field and to learn more about the career prospects in the field of electrical and computer engineering.
