University of Macau (UM) Librarian Dr Paul Poon recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Michigan’s School of Information for his contributions to the field of information. The University of Michigan praised Dr Poon for being one of the most recognised library leaders in Asia for nearly a half century. Dr Poon has served as the chief librarian at three premier academic libraries in the Asia-Pacific region, namely the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s New Asia College, the City University of Hong Kong, and UM. The school also recognised Dr Poon’s effort in forming the Macau Academic Libraries Alliance.

The University of Michigan’s School of Information is a top institution in the field of information sciences, with a strong emphasis on research in the development of digital library systems. Many of its graduates hold important positions in libraries around the world. Past recipients of its Distinguished Alumni Award include former University of Michigan-Flint Chancellor Dr Ruth Person, Gerald R Ford Presidential Library and Museum Director Dr Elaine Didier, and former World Bank Senior Information Officer Kenlee Ray.

The award ceremony was held earlier at the University of Michigan. On the same occasion, Stuart Feldman, Google’s vice president of engineering, received the Honorary Alumni Award from the University of Michigan School of Information.
