University of Macau (UM) student Victória Fong Lai I from the Department of Portuguese received the Best Student of Portuguese Award from the Casa de Portugal em Macau (The Home of Portugal in Macao), in recognition her excellent work and commitment to learning the Portuguese language and culture.

But would it surprise you if I tell you that Victória did not know a word of Portuguese before she became a student at UM? Knowing her weakness, she studied extra hard in order to make up for her lack of prior training in the language. After receiving the award, Victória is most thankful to her teacher Zhang Jing from the Department of Portuguese for her encouragement because she once said to Victória: ‘It is actually an advantage to start from zero because the teachers at UM know how to introduce you to the field better than anyone.’ Victória remembers her words by heart. After making a great effort studying with several teachers, Victória finally received the Best Student of Portuguese Award from the Casa de Portugal em Macau. Victória hopes to pursue further studies after graduation and her goal is to become a Portuguese teacher.
