UM Library Initiates Collaboration among Academic Libraries on Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait

In order to strengthen the collaboration between the University of Macau Library and academic libraries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, UM Library took the initiative in organizing a “Joint Working Meeting between UM Library and its Partner Libraries”, which was held at UM Library on 5 September 2008. 16 academic library directors participated in this meeting and all of them are from key universities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, e.g., Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Tongji University, Taiwan University, and University of Hong Kong. They all endorsed and commended the initiative taken by UM Library in developing a mechanism of collaboration among Cross-Strait academic libraries. In addition, as a follow-up to this meeting held in UM Library, they all agreed to hold a Cross-Strait Academic Libraries Joint Forum in 2010 in Shanghai, which will be organized by Fudan University. Furthermore, UM Library was unanimously elected as the Secretariat of this Forum.

UM Library is very pleased with the enthusiastic responses received. Dr. Paul W.T. Poon, the University Librarian, hopes that with the collaboration mechanism in place, the UM Library’s services will be further enhanced, thus benefiting the learning, teaching and research activities of the university community.
