UM Vice-Rector-Designate Professor Simon Shun-Man Ho Wins Prestigious “Aspen Institute 2008 Faculty Pioneer Award”

 

Professor Simon Shun-Man Ho, who will assume office of the Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) of the University of Macau (UM) next semester, has won an Aspen Institute 2008 Faculty Pioneer Award (in the category of External Impact) in recognition of his significant contributions to promoting corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. Professor Ho is the first Chinese to receive this international prestigious award.

According to the Aspen Institute, a prominent Washington based international non-profit body founded in 1950 to promote leadership and sound public policy, the Faculty Pioneer Awards recognize exceptional faculty that are leaders in integrating social and environmental issues into their research and teaching both on as well as off campus. It is an international prestigious award in the academic sector of business administration. It was described as “Oscars of the Business School World” by the Finance Times last year. Only five winners were selected this year from approximately 100 nominations in nearly 20 countries.

Professor Ho has been teaching, researching and promoting on corporate governance and corporate social responsibility actively since late 1990s. He is pleased to receive the award, he said: “The recent global financial tsunami has proven that good corporate governance is of vital importance to the world economy. Improving corporate governance is the key for the healthy development of a financial market and the economy as a whole.”

Professor Ho was invited to attend the Faculty Pioneer recognition event in New York City on 5 November during the annual Business Social Responsibility Conference. He received the award and gave a speech sharing his insights on the role of corporate governance on the recent global financial crisis.

As Dean of School of Business and Director of Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy (CCGFP) presently at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), Professor Ho established the CCGFP, the world’s first taught MSc programme in Corporate Governance and Directorship, and the Asia-Pacific Corporate Governance Conference in 2004. Under his leadership, the Centre has collaborated with over 20 organizations on various corporate governance projects. Before joining HKBU, he has taught at the School of Accountancy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for more than 20 years. He served as the Director of that School from 1995 to 2002 and Director of the Centre for Accounting Disclosure and Corporate Governance from 1998 to 2004. Under his leadership, the School of Accountancy of CUHK became the first accounting school outside North America to receive the Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB) accreditation in 1998. As pushed by the deans of the business colleges of both parties, HKBU and UM jointly founded the World Business Ethics Forum in 2006. His recent works on family business governance, executive compensations and corporate social responsibility have attracted wide attention and several awards.
