The University of Macau’s (UM) Honours College Student Association (HCSA) and Honours College Alumni Association (HCAA) recently arranged for 35 students and alumni to visit the Society for the Protection of Animals (Anima Macau). The visit not only offered an opportunity for students to learn to take care of animals, it also gave them a chance to contemplate on legal issues related to animal protection.

During the visit, UM students and alumni talked to the director and volunteers of Anima Macau to learn more about the conditions of abandoned animals in Macao. The students also had a chance to interact with the animals there. One of the participants, HC student Chui, said, ‘Animals are living beings too, not toys. We should think twice before getting a pet and we should learn to be a responsible owner once we make our decision. We believe that education can be an effective way of stopping cruelty to animals. As a member of the HC, we should take the lead in encouraging our schoolmates and the public to protect and care for animals.”

Anima Macau was established in 2003 with the aim of providing shelter for abandoned animals in Macao.
