UM Awarded Macao’s First U.S. Patent in Hi-technology Microelectronics

The University of Macau (UM) has earned Macao’s first U.S. patent in hi-technology microelectronics. This demonstrates the foresight and innovation of UM’s research in this area. A presentation was held by UM today to the general public and the press, discussing possible applications of this state-of-the-art technology and its profound impact on the industry.

With long-standing devotion to the R&D in hi-technology microelectronics, a UM research team composed of Prof. Rui Martins, UM Vice Rector (Research), Prof. U Seng Pan and Dr. Mak Pui In from the Faculty of Science and Technology, has achieved significant results in very-large-scale integrated circuit chips design. In recent years, the research in “Two-Step Channel Selection for Wireless Receiver Front-Ends” developed by a team led by the principal researcher. Mak Pui In has achieved remarkable breakthroughs. With years’ efforts of the researchers and the support from Macao’s Science and Technology Development Fund, this new technology finally passed the rigorous review process of the U.S. Patent and Trade Mark Office in May 2009, and was granted the very first U.S. patent in this area in UM and Macao. This achievement has put UM at the forefront of the worldwide research in hi-technology microelectronics.

Prof. Wei Zhao, Rector of the University of Macau, says in his speech that the approval of the first U.S. patent in UM history and the best Chapter Award by IEEE CAS society indicate a new “high” of the research activity in the University of Macau. He also says that the scientific research not only teaches us the knowledge of a subject domain, but also trains us for the skills such as strategic planning, team working, effective communications and management, etc. These skills are critical for a successful scientist, but these skills are even more important for future leaders. It is because of this that many first-class universities are promoting scientific research and professional activities.

During the presentation, the research team introduced the R&D process for this patent and the expected applications in hi-technology microelectronics products. The researchers said that the new technology could be incorporated in wireless telecommunication chips, and therefore help to develop Hi-Tec multi-system wireless products at reduced costs. Furthermore, the new patent is extremely significant for its innovative impact on the current and future development in wireless microsystems.

Prof. Rui Martins, Prof. U Seng Pan, Prof. Tam Kam Weng and Dr. Mak Pui In have spared no efforts in the development of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Macao Chapter. In recognition of their contributions to promoting academic and technological development in the related fields in the past year, such as organization of IEEE flagship conferences, distinguished lectures by well-known scholars, technical seminars and membership development, IEEE CASS honored the Macao Chapter with the 2009 CASS Chapter-of-the-Year Award.

IEEE CASS is one of the oldest and largest societies in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - the largest professional association in the world with more than 350,000 members), with more than one hundred well-established chapters around the world. This year, 13 chapters were nominated for the award. The conferral ceremony was held during the flagship conference of the society - ISCAS 2009 on May 26th in the Grand Hotel of Taipei, Taiwan where the President of the IEEE CAS Society, Prof. Dave J. Allstot, University of Washington, Seattle, USA, bestowed the award on Prof. Rui Martins, Macao Chapter Chair for 2008. After being elected as the Vice President for Region 10 of CASS for the period from 2009 to 2010, Prof. Rui Martins resigned from his post as CASS Macao Chapter Chair in 2009 and was succeeded by Prof. Seng-Pan U.
