When you walk into a tea house in the city of Tainan, or go to a shop to rent a bike, you would find modern artwork on the walls depicting the everyday life of the city. Unexpectedly touched, you want more. But artistic works don’t just walk off the exhibition walls. It is the curator that brings them into touch with a wider audience of ordinary people. By playing the role of marketing and planning, curators are slowly changing the way people appreciate art.

On 8 November, Dr. Nicole Yi-Hsin Lai, director and chief curator of the Art Square Taiwan, gave a talk titled “What do curators do?” at Creative Macau, which was one of the activities under the Artist-in-Residence Programme co-organised by the Pearl Jubilee College and the East Asia College. Earlier Dr. Lai organised an exhibition for Dr. Chu Yinhua, another guest invited under the Artist-in-Residence Programme. This lecture was a sequel to Dr. Chu’s talk on “Mapping Urban Imaginary”. Dr. Lai discussed artistic creation from a different perspective and shared her experience in organising exhibitions.

Following this lecture, Dr. Lai will hold a workshop to teach students how to write an exhibition proposal.
