The famous South Korean director Mr. Kang Je-Gyu last Friday (4 October) visited the University of Macau (UM) to participate in a Q&A session with the students following the screening of his latest blockbuster, My Way (2011). Mr. Kang Je-Gyu encouraged the students not to fear difficulties in the pursuit of their dreams.

Mr. Kang Je-Gyu is South Korea's A-list film director. He is a pioneer of the Korean-style blockbuster films, specialising in war and action genres. My Way (2011) tells the story of two men - one Korean and the other Japanese - who first became soldiers of the Japanese Empire during the colonial period, and then prisoners of war of the Soviet Union, and finally soldiers in Nazi Germany when the Allies invaded the Normandy Beaches on D-Day in 1944. Students who watched the film felt very touched by how the two soldiers never gave up their hopes and dreams in even the direst situations.

When asked by a student interested to pursue a career in film about the recipe for becoming a great director, Mr. Kang Je-Gyu said modestly, “That’s a question I ask myself every day. How can I become a good director? How can I make a good film?”

Part of Korea’s Cultural Week 2013, the event was co-organised by UM’s Department of Communication, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, the Cine Fan Club of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the University of Hong Kong. The Q&A session was chaired by Prof. Tan See Kam from the Department of Communication. Attending the event with Director Kang Je-Gyu were Dr. Aaron Han Joon Magnan-Park, assistant professor from the Faculty of Arts, University of Hong Kong, and translator Mr. Seung Lee.
