Chen Bin, a master’s graduate of the University of Macau’s (UM) Department of History, has been awarded a scholarship by the Pennsylvania State University for PhD studies in the United States. Chen is the first UM graduate in history to have been awarded a scholarship for PhD studies in the US.

Chen’s thesis for his master’s studies is titled Preparing for the Challenge Ahead: A History of the Canton Register, c. 1827 to 1838", which was supervised by Dr. Barry Crosbie. The coursework and the thesis Chen completed for his master’s studies equipped him with solid knowledge of the various historiographies for comparison of source materials from different cultures.

For his PhD studies in the US, Chen will focus on the border areas of China by comparing materials from western sources such as newspapers with materials from Chinese sources.
