UM delegation visits Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council

A delegation of the University of Macau (UM), headed by Rector Wei Zhao, recently visited the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office (HMO) of the State Council in Beijing. The delegation met with Xu Ze, deputy director of the HMO and briefed him on the latest progress of UM’s new campus and the University’s development plans. Xu noted that the central government had attached great importance to UM’s new campus, and that his Office would continue to render its support for UM’s development.

The delegation had Liu Xiaohang and Xu Ting, head and deputy head of the Department of Culture and Education, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR (the Macao Liaison Office) as its advisors, and was accompanied by Hong Bo, head of the Division of Education under the Macao Liaison Office. Also present at the meeting were Liu Wenda, deputy head of the Department of Liaison of HMO, Wu Wei, deputy head of the Department of Exchange and Cooperation of HMO, and You Yuan, head of the Division of Education, Science and Culture under the Department of Exchange and Cooperation of HMO.

Xu said that the central government was highly attentive to and concerned about UM’s new campus project and future growth. Not only Macao citizens, but also people across the country, and many overseas institutions were paying close attention to UM’s new campus. Therefore, he observed that Rector Zhao had a great mission on his shoulders, and trusted that Rector Zhao would do a good job in promoting UM’s advancement. Xu also pointed out that UM’s new campus would face a series of new challenges and opportunities; his Office would continue to keep its support forthcoming for UM’s development on various fronts, while he was looking forward to the University’s promising future. In response, Rector Zhao said that UM was steadfastly moving ahead toward becoming a world-class university as expected by China’s former president Hu Jintao.

The delegation then paid a visit to the Beijing Office of the Macao Liaison Office, and was received by its head Qin Tieying, as well as Liu Xiaohang and Xu Ting.

Members of the UM delegation included Prof. Simon Ho, vice rector for academic affairs, Prof. Shijian Mo, dean of Faculty of Law, Prof. Hao Yufan, dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof. Philip Chen, dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Wang Yitao, director of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Ms Carol Wong, functional head of Mainland affairs of the Global Affairs Office.
