The Department of
Communication, University of Macau joined a group of world famous universities
in co-organizing two distinguished conference events, the ICA (International
Communication Association) preconference of “China and the New Internet World”,
and “The Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC11)” at the University of
Oxford on June 14-15, 2013. The co-organizers included the Oxford Internet
Institute (OII); the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) at
the University of Oxford, the Annenberg School for Communication &
Journalism at University of Southern California; the Center for Global
Communications Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication at the
University of Pennsylvania; the Global Communication Research Institute at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University; and the Singapore Internet Research Center at
Nanyang Technological University. This is the first time that the ICA annual
conference, the most famous conference in communication studies has a
preconference that focused on China’s
Internet studies. The events gathered the most well-known scholars in China’s
Internet studies. The UM delegation, led by Prof. Martin Montgomery, Head of
the Department of Communication, Prof. Wu Mei, Deputy Head of the Department of Communication, along with six graduate students, delivered two
roundtable discussions and three presentations.
