The University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Law (FLL) is going to hold an international conference on "Reassessing the EU-Asia Pacific Relationship in the Context of the EU Crisis" on 17 May and 18 May. Approximately seventy academics and postgraduate students from a wide range of fields and most of the Asia Pacific and several European jurisdictions have contributed papers and will give presentations at this conference, staging the latest research endeavors and academic thinking on the matter, and adding to a deeper understanding of the complexities of the EU-Asia Pacific relationship.

UM today (13 May) held a press conference during which Prof. Paulo Jorge Tavares Canelas de Castro from FLL provided some background information about the international conference. Prof. Paulo Castro noted that to explore the general topic of the EU-Asia Pacific relationship in the context of the EU crisis, the conference offers perspectives on four specific themes: Assessing the Fallout, Perception of Crisis, Models of Integration and The Way Forward. Two keynote speakers, Ing Joao Cravinho, former minister and European politician, and Prof. Elisa Ferreira, are both prominent and recognised policy-makers at European and international levels. Other speakers include the most eminent academic experts in the field from the Asia Pacific region and Europe. For instance, Prof. Dai Bingran, one of the speakers, is the director of the Centre of European Studies and deputy director of the Institute of World Economy at Fudan University in Shanghai. He was awarded the European Union’s Jean Monnet Prize in 2008. The president of the European Community Studies Association, the ten presidents of the national European Union studies associations in the Asia Pacific region, and the head of the Office of the European Union to Hong Kong and Macao will also attend the conference.

The event is co-organised by UM’s FLL and the European Union Studies Association-Asia Pacific and co-sponsored by the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme, the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM), and the Macao Foundation. FLL expects this event to offer new perspectives on the relationship between the EU and the Asia Pacific region. The findings and interaction among the participants are expected to result in publications and benefit future research and policy-making in the area.

The conference will be held on 17 May and 18 May 2013 from 9:00am to 5:30pm in Ho Yin Convention Centre (HG01 – HG03), UM. Interested parties are welcome to join. For enquiries, please call (853) 8397 4770 during office hours or email to karenaLao@um.edu.mo.
