The University of Macau’s (UM) Martial Arts Society yesterday organised an extracurricular Wing Chun class. Wing Chun is a system of martial arts that originated from southern China and also an effective self-defence system. Its non-reliance on physical size and strength makes it suitable for men and women alike. No wonder the class attracted many female students. Lao Sin Man, vice president of the Martial Arts Society, said she hopes to promote the Chinese martial arts through this activity. Mr S K Cheung, who studied under a student of the famous Ip Man, is the coach for the extracurricular class. Mr Cheung said practicing Wing Chun is good for one’s mind and body. He admitted that he is a little worried about the loss of this Chinese martial art because many young people nowadays would rather play video games than do exercises, let alone practice Wing Chun. But he felt very happy that many UM students enrolled for the class. He stressed that learning Wing Chun is a long process that requires persistence.
