The University of Macau (UM) yesterday (21 January) held an honorary degree conferment ceremony in Fo Guang Shan, Taiwan. UM’s University Council Chair Tse Chi Wai conferred, on behalf of Macao SAR Chief Executive and UM Chancellor Chui Sai On, a Degree of Doctor of Humanities honoris causa upon The Most Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cultural and social affairs. Lei Pui Lam, chair of UM’s Honorary Degrees and Titles Committee; Wei Zhao, rector of UM; Haydn Chen, vice rector (student affairs) of UM; Hao Yufan, dean of UM’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities; Paul Pang, registrar of UM; Liu Yanshen, professor of the Central China Normal University, and numerous guests and Master Hsing Yun’s students from around the world, attended the ceremony and offered their congratulations to Master Hsing Yun on his receiving the honorary degree.

The UM delegation arrived at the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, yesterday afternoon, and was warmly received by Master Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. The conferment ceremony was held at the Dharma Transmission Center. Over 1,000 students of Master Hsing Yun attended the ceremony. Master Hsing Yun, said UM Rector Wei Zhao in his citation, developed a system of the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism with wise words and philanthropic deeds, and he is dedicated to promoting the harmonious coexistence of different religions. Over the past seven decades, Master Hsing Yun has spared no effort to promote Buddhist education. He has founded a large number of educational institutions around the world, including numerous universities, over 50 Chinese schools, and 16 Tsung Lin Buddhist colleges. He has given inspiring lectures at UM and the Chinese Cultural Exchange Association in Macao. Rector Wei Zhao stressed that UM admires the way Master Hsing Yun practices his religious faith through compassion and philanthropic deeds as well as his remarkable achievements. Rector Wei Zhao mentioned that Master Hsing Yun enjoys an extremely high status among his followers in Macao and his renown spreads across the whole city. UM is deeply honoured, noted Rector Wei Zhao, to have formed a connection with Master Hsing Yun.

After the citation, UM’s University Council Chair Tse Chi Wai, in the company of Lei Pui Lam and Wei Zhao, presented the certificate of the Degree of Doctor of Humanities honoris causa to Master Hsing Yun. Master Hsing Yun thanked UM for the honorary degree and said from now on he will take pride in UM. He said all his life he hasn’t received any formal schooling, but in his eyes the world itself is a university, and doing one’s best to serve the world is practicing the Universal Law. He said, “The fact that UM conferred this honorary degree on me shows that there is no one way to attain great achievements in life, and that all roads lead to Rome, as long as one motivates himself to reach his goals.” In view of Macao’s rapid economic development in recent years, Master Hsing Yun said he hopes that by making use of its distinctive blend of Eastern and Western cultures Macao could in time develop into a world centre for the studies of religions where there is no man-made differentiation between religions. He also said he hopes to have the opportunity to re-visit UM on its beautiful new campus some day.

At the ceremony, UM presented to Master Hsing Yun three calligraphy works by UM teachers and students. In appreciation, Master Hsing Yun presented a Zisha teapot and an alms bowl to Tse Chi Wai and Lei Pui Lam, and his calligraphy work “Anuttara” to Rector Wei Zhao. He explained that “Anuttara” means “the unsurpassed one”, and said he wishes to convey through the calligraphy work his hope that UM can continue to fulfill its role to educate people and to nurture unsurpassed graduates for the world.
