The three-day Social Media, Digital Network and Globalization: 2012 China New Media Communication Association Annual Conference, Macao International Conference (2012 CNMCA Macao), jointly organised by the University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Communication and the China New Media Communication Association (CNMCA), opened at UM on Thursday 6 December. Over 140 scholars, professionals and educators in the field of new media communication from around the world, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Europe and North America, attended The 2012 CNMCA Macao to explore issues related to new media and globalisation.

The highest-level academic conference on new media communication research in China, the 2012 CNMCA Macao marks the first cooperation between UM’s Department of Communication and CNMCA, and has the support of the Macao Association for Internet Research.

There will be a Roundtable Forum entitled “New Media and Globalization” (in English), to be chaired by UM professor Wu Mei, as well as a Special Methodology Panel entitled “Behavior and Content Analysis through Big Data” (in Chinese), to be chaired by Prof Jin Jianbin from Tsinghua University. Both events will be held on 8 December.

The conference also includes over 20 parallel panels in Chinese or English on various topics including new media, political communication and civil society; new media industry research; culture studies of new media; transformation of traditional media research; the communication and trend of social media—micro-blog; new media advertising and brand communication research; and new media management and self-discipline.

Keynote speakers included Prof William H Dutton from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford; Prof Gustavo Cardoso from ISCTE - Lisbon University Institute; Prof Jonathan J H Zhu from the City University of Hong Kong, who is also a Changjiang Scholar at Renmin University of China; Prof Carolyn A Lin from the University of Connecticut; and Prof Du Junfei, Associate Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Nanjing University and president of CNMCA.
