On Tuesday 16 October, around 50 teachers and support staff, drawn from every faculty, gathered together for the first ever GE General Assembly.  Vice-Rector Simon Ho explained that, whereas, the design of the new GE programme was based on careful research into the most suitable models available, this was essentially a top down process. The successful implementation of the programme however, would involve many challenges and should be seen as more a bottom up or grassroots process.  GE teachers could lead the way by pioneering more imaginative and participation based methods of teaching and assessment and so be a major force in the transformation of our learning culture. He reassured the assembled GE teachers that the university placed great importance on the success of the programme as a major driver in the reform of undergraduate education and was ready to support them in any way that it could, including professional training and teaching enhancement grants. The teachers agreed that the assembly was an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and the fostering of good practice and a great opportunity to explore collaboration with colleagues from other faculties.
