The University of Macau’s (UM) Honours College (HC) students recently organized a two-day leadership exchange trip to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in hopes of enhancing understanding between Hong Kong and Macao students, and promoting leadership training and academic exchanges.

The leadership exchange group, which consisted of seventeen HC students, received warm welcome from the coordinator of CUHK’s Leadership Development Program (LDP), and was given a campus tour by student representatives of LDP. After both parties shared some information on UM’s Honours Programme and CUHK’s LDP, students discussed hot current affairs, including real estate hegemony, economic and cultural issues of Hong Kong and Macao. Students also participated in leadership workshops, which included games and video sharing, to learn about how to better collaborate in different groups and strengthen situational leadership.

In order to help student learn more about the impact of urban development on rural society, as well as how to implement sustainable agriculture in community life, a visit to the Mapopo Community Farm was specially arranged. On the Mapopo Community Farm, students experienced first-hand a different farming process and had a better understanding of a different way of life outside the city.

Participants said they enjoyed the trip very much, because firstly it provided a wonderful opportunity for both parties to learn from each other and share experience; secondly the LDP’s impromptu discussion model inspired them to think independently and critically; and lastly the visit to the community farm was a refreshingly new experience and prompted them to reflect on their city life.
