UM’s first doctor of law publishes an academic monograph

Recently, the Theory of Ecological Legal Interest in the Criminal Law, written by Dr. Jiao Yanpeng, the first doctor of law of the University of Macau (UM), was published by the China University of Politic Science and Law Press, a renowned law books publishing agency in mainland China.

Based on Dr. Jiao’s doctoral dissertation entitled, “A Study on Basic Theory of Ecological Legal Interest in Criminal Law”, the Theory of Ecological Legal Interest in the Criminal Law contains eight chapters and 325, 000 words. Its publication has aroused widespread attention and acclaim. For instance, the China Criminal Law Society rates it as a pioneering, innovative and significant achievement; and the China Environmental Law Society regards it as a major innovation in theoretical research in basic environmental law.

Dr. Jiao specializes in criminal juridical sciences. He began his study at UM under Prof. Zhao Guoqiang in September 2008. He passed his thesis defense with excellence in February 2011 and became UM’s first doctor of law since the university launched PhD programmes in law. Dr. Jiao is now an associate professor, supervisor for master students and director of the legal specialists training and research centre affiliated with Soochow University’s Law School, a famous law education and research centre in China.

In the foreword of Dr. Jiao’s book, Prof. Zhao Bingzhi, vice chairman of the International Law Association and chairman of the Chinese Criminal Law Research Association, wrote, “Jiao’s receipt of a doctor of law degree from Macao’s first public university is a landmark in Macao’s law education history. The academic value of the Theory of Ecological Legal Interest in the Criminal Law indicates that UM already has the ability to produce world-class legal specialists.”
