Today (23 March 2012), the University of Macau’s (UM) State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (AMS-VLSI Lab) held the first meeting of its Academic Committee, whose thirteen members are all world-renowned experts on microelectronics, to discuss strategies for research and personnel development. The meeting was preceded by a certificate of appointment presentation ceremony.

Mr. Paulo Cheang Kun Wai, member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR, presented certificates of appointment to Prof. Rui Martins, UM’s vice rector (research) and director of the AMS-VLSI Lab; and Prof. Franco Maloberti, director of the Academic Committee of the AMS-VLSI Lab. Afterwards, Prof. Martins presented certificates of appointment to Academic Committee members present at the meeting, including Prof. Hoi-Jun Yoo from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Korea), Prof. Jacob Baker from Boise State University (the United States), Prof. Hong Zhiliang from Fudan University (mainland China), Prof. Wang Zhihua from Tsinghua University (mainland China), Prof. Akira Matsuzawa from the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), Dr. Chris Mangelsdorf from Analog Devices (the United States), Prof. Ming-Dou Ker from the National Chiao-Tung University (Taiwan), Prof. Bram Nauta from the University of Twente (Netherlands), and Prof. Howard Luong from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong). Other Academic Committee members include Prof. Behzad Razavi at the University of California, Los Angeles (the United States), Prof. Bang-Sup Song at the University of California, Berkeley (the United States), and Prof. Michiel Steyaert at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).

Prof. Martins said that the lab was inaugurated one year ago, and even though it has already obtained some international recognition, it is still in the early stage; and the lab has invited internationally well-known experts and scholars to serve on the Academic Committee, in order to benefit from the wisdom of the members so that the lab can achieve greater progress in the future. Prof. Martins stressed that the new campus will provide enormous opportunities and usher in a new era for the lab.

At the meeting, members of the Academic Committee and UM’s microelectronics research team conducted heated discussions on a wide range of issues, including wireless IC, data conversion and signal processing, cyber physical systems, biomedical IC and power management IC, and strategies for training high-calibre local specialists in microelectronics. After the meeting, committee members visited the lab where they learned about UM’s history in chip development as well as the lab’s ongoing research projects.
