       China’s most influential English

        speaking contest “FLTRP Cup”

Mr. Dang Hao, a master student of the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), won the first prize at the 2011 “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking Contest, one of the most influential English speaking contests for university students in China. Prof. Tan See Kam, who helped Mr. Dang prepare for the competition, received “First Prize Coach Award”.

Co-organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), and the Advisory Board for College Foreign Language Teaching and the Sub-committee on Professional Teaching of English at Tertiary Institutions under the Ministry of Education of PRC, the “FLTRP Cup” is a most prominent English speaking contest in China. Over the past ten years, this competition has attracted more than ten million students from over one thousand tertiary institutions in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The panel of judges comprises experts from top-ranking institutions such as Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Fudan University, the People’s University of China, Nanjing Normal University, Shandong University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, George Mason University, the University of Wisconsin, and the British Council.

Contestants need to go through preliminaries, provincial-level semi-finals, and the national final. This year, a total of eighty-nine students from across the country entered the final, including Mr. Dang, the first runner-up at the semi-final for the Macao region.
