UM holds the International Seminar on Jin Yong and New Literature in Chinese

Numerous renowned scholars attend the International Seminar on Jin Yong and Chinese New Literature

On 9 and 10 November 2011, the University of Macau (UM) held the International Seminar on Jin Yong and New Literature in Chinese. The seminar was co-organized by UM’s Department of Chinese, the International Jin Yong Research Association, and Jin Yong Research Association in Haining, Zhejiang province. This seminar was part of the Lecture Series, "New Literature in Chinese", an academic brand of the Department of Chinese. Forty well-known scholars from the U.S., Germany, South Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao, attended the seminar and had in-depth discussions about the status, value and impact of Jin Yong’s novels, his literature career, and Hong Kong martial arts novelists in the field of New Literature in Chinese.

Prof. Zhu Shoutong, head of the Department of Chinese at UM, delivered an opening speech at the seminar. He fully affirmed the research achievements of "New Literature in Chinese" in recent years. He analyzed the current situation and future development of the studies of Jin Yong’s works as well as the influence of his works in the field of “New Literature in Chinese”, pointing out that Jin Yong’s novels and the Hong Kong martial arts literature he represents have made remarkable contributions to Chinese culture, and that it is of great academic value to review and position the martial arts literature from the perspective of “New Literature in Chinese”. Mr. Jin Yong sent a warm congratulatory letter specifically for the convening of the meeting. Mr. Paul Pang, registrar of UM; Li Siqi, founder and president of the International Jin Yong Research Association; Wang Jingsan, president of Jin Yong Research Association in Haining, Zhejiang province; Wan Dehua, president of Macau Ricci Institute; and Li Yijian, Jin Yong’s secretary; gave speeches at the meeting successively.

Others that delivered insightful speeches at the seminar included Ku Bin, a well-known sinologist from Germany; Zhang Yingjin, professor at the University of San Diego in the U.S., Dong Naibin, former deputy director of the Literature Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Li Huoren, president of the International Jin Yong Research Association; Chen Mo, expert on the studies of Jin Yong and his works; Xu Sinian, former chief editor of Suzhou University Press; Tang Zhesheng, expert on popular novels; Cao Zhengwen, senior editor of Xinmin Evening News; Wang Xuehai, vice president of Jin Yong Academic Research Association in Haining; Qin Liangfei and Jin Huiyuan from the Research Center on East-Asian Culture in South Korea; Prof. Han Yunbo from the Research Center on Chinese Xia Culture; Prof. Jia Zhenyong of the Faculty of Arts at Shandong Normal University; and Zhang Qida, doctoral student at Taiwan National Central University. Attendees were of an unanimous opinion that this seminar was of high academic value and pertinence to the present.
