UM holds seminar on responsible gambling

The seminar on responsible gambling attracts many participants.

The third Asian Pacific Problem Gambling and Addictions Conference 2011 – Macao Session was held at the University of Macau’s (UM) Ho Yin Convention Centre. The conference was jointly organized by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Even Centre, the Division on Addictions of Cambridge Health Alliance, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, UM’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming(ISCG), and Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Services Coordination Office.

At the seminar, UM’s Acting Rector Prof. Rui Martins said that 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of UM. This event was only one of the many events to celebrate the anniversary.

Responsible gambling has been practiced in countries where gambling industry is highly developed, like Australia, Canada, and the United States of America, and is expanding globally. Through this conference, he hoped that people will have a better understanding of both the global and the local responsible gambling scenes and gain more insights opolicy, practice and research settings.

Invited by UM’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming, Prof. Bo. J. Bernhard, Director of the Gambling Research of the International Gaming Institute, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, gave a keynote speech in the Macao session. He talked about how responsible gambling has expanded globally, how cultural influences dictate different approaches of responsible gambling, and how understanding of this global scene helps inform important decisions regarding gaming in policy and research settings. He also explored the practice of responsible gambling in Macao and compares local practices with those in other countries with local specialists.

In order to enhance people’s understanding of the practice of responsible gambling in Macao, the Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Service Coordination Office arranged for the participants to visit the service centres and casinos in Macao following the seminar. This seminar is one of the activities in celebration of the 30th anniversary of UM.
