An international workshop on "Sustainable Urban Future in Pearl River Delta Region, China” holds at UM

A workshop on “Sustainable Urban Future in Pearl River Delta Region”, which was jointly organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology, the University of Macau (UM) and Integrated Research System of Sustainability Science, the University of Tokyo, took place at UM on 27th September 2010.

The workshop was presented by professors from The University of Tokyo including Prof. Akimasa Sumi, Dr. Tetsuo Kidokoro, Dr. Fukushi Kensuke, Dr. Hironori Kato, Dr. Nobuaki Ohmori, Dr. Hiroyuki Katayama, Dr. Kyoung Jin An, Dr. Hirotaka Matsuda, and distinguish individuals from the leading research institutes in Pearl River Delta Region (PRD), including Dr. Fei-yu Kang from Tsinghua University, Mr. Xiaojun Fan, Executive Director of Macau Water Corporation, Dr. Wanxin Li from the City University of Hong Kong, Dr.Yungang Liu, from Zhongshan University, Dr. Guoyi Tang from Tsinghua University, and UM Prof.Zhishi. Each of them gave a 20-minute lecture on the topic of urban sustainable development, such as strategies and techniques.

Throughout the workshop, it covered the sharing of understanding of the sustainable urban future, the identification of the urgent research needs, and a research framework for setting up a research project on sustainable urban future in PRD. Followed by the workshop, the FST of UM and the Transdisciplinary Initiative for Global Sustainability, The University of Tokyo signed an agreement on the education and academic cooperation.

The all-day long workshop attracted more than 50 students and teachers to attend and they successfully exchanged their views on the pressing environmental issues and provided insights for the sustainable urban future in PRD as well.
