Yesterday (18 September 2010) the University of Macau (UM) kicked off the “Giving Back to the Alma Mater” Activity Series, with the aim of strengthening ties with its alumni. A variety of activities were arranged, including the Alumni Day Launching Ceremony cum Student Awards Presentation Ceremony, campus tour, and games. Many alumni returned to UM to catch up on old times and witness current students receiving awards. They also took the opportunity to learn about the major research achievements of UM.

The Alumni Day Launching Ceremony was followed by the Scholarship and “Rector’s Honor List” Presentation. This year, UM established 220 scholarships with donations of MOP 4.57 million from 30 institutions and individuals. 160 current students with excellent academic performance and active participation in extracurricular activities and societal services received scholarships in the presence of their senior alumni.

UM Rector Wei Zhao said that it is very invigorating to see the alumni returning to the University to learn about changes at the school, enjoy a fun-filled weekend at their alma mater and to reunite with old classmates and former teachers at the reunion dinner. Hence, he looks forward to working with more alumni to create more opportunities for them to participate in the life of the University, to help shape the future of UM and to give back, for the sake of the current students and the students that are yet to come.

UM also granted awards to students who made the Rector’s Honour List 2009/2010, including Tam Meng Chu of the Faculty of Business Administration majoring in Gaming Management, Wu Hio Tong of the Faculty of Education majoring in Mathematics, Chong Chi Wai of the Faculty of Law majoring in Law in Chinese Language, Lai Io Fai of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities majoring in Communication, and Cheok Meng Fai of the Faculty of Science and Technology majoring in Civil Engineering. These students achieved the best academic performance in their respective faculties for the 2009/2010 academic year.

Last year UM launched the Peer Support Programme (PSP) whereby senior students act as mentors to junior students and share their experiences in study and social activities. The purpose of PSP is to prepare students for the future challenges on the job market. To give new momentum to the programme, the PSP Alumni Association Inauguration Ceremony was held following the Scholarship and “Rector’s Honor List” Presentation.

In addition to the abovementioned activities, there were also sports competition, photography competition, games, exhibition booths, alumni gathering, and dinner. Many alumni and their family members excitedly snapped away the whole time, hoping to capture the memorable moments on their cameras. They said that “Alumni Day” offered them a precious opportunity to catch up on old times with their former schoolmates and teachers and also to learn about the latest developments of UM and its major research achievements.
