The 20th AULP annual conference to open in Macao

AULP will be held in Macao from 6 September to 9 September 2010

The 20th annual conference of the Association of Universities of Portuguese Language (AULP) will be held in Macao from 6 September to 9 September 2010. University of Macau (UM), Macao Polytechnic Institute (IPM) and Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) form the local organizing committee for this conference. The conference, whose theme is “China, Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries”, will serve as an important platform for China and Portuguese-speaking countries to communicate and cooperate with one another. Approximately 150 representatives from Portuguese-speaking universities will attend the conference and have in-depth discussions on five topics, namely “economy, commerce and development”, “problematics of the Portuguese language in the world”, “linguistic unity and normative plurality”, “some challenges of the Portuguese-speaking world”, and “networks of cooperation in higher education”.

The opening ceremony will take place on 7 September at the Cultural Centre of UM. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Cheong U, Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries Domingos Simões and President of AULP Clélio Campolina Diniz will jointly presided over the ceremony. Approximately 150 people comprised of members of the Executive Council of AULP, keynote speakers and representatives from Portuguese-speaking universities will attend the 2-day conference. Several parallel sessions, including the General Assembly of AULP, Meeting of the Council of Presidents of Portuguese Universities and Meeting of the Coordination Council of the Polytechnic Institutes of Portugal, will be held during the two days. Mainland universities that have departments or faculties of the Portuguese language will also attend the conference and meet with representatives from tertiary institutions that are AULP members. The first-day conference will take place at the Ho Yin Convention Centre of UM, and the second-day conference will be held at IPM and IFT. In addition to the support from the Macao SAR Government, the conference also has the funding and support from Macao Foundation, Macau Government Tourist Office and the Consulate General of Portugal in Macao.

AULP is a large international academic organization. It has more than 200 members from Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, East-Timor and Macao, as well as some associate members which are mainly departments of Portuguese at tertiary institutions in the United States, France and Italy. There are 6 members from Macao: UM, IPM, IFT, International Institute of Macau (IIM), University of Saint-Joseph, and Asia International Open University (Macau).

AULP holds its annual conferences in Portugal, Brazil, Africa and Macao in rotation. UM, IPM and IFT cooperated with AULP in hosting the annual conferences in 1998, 2003 and 2006 (IIM began participation in 2003). Since 2005 UM has been serving as AULP’s Vice President for Asia Pacific.
