Ten reasons why you should consider UM for studies

It’s that time of year again! If you are a college-bound high school student, you are probably racking your brains about where to go for college after graduation. Before you roll up your sleeves and study the best universities guide, take a moment to read the ten reasons why you should consider the University of Macau (UM) for studies:

1.     The only public comprehensive university in Macao, UM implements a unique ‘4-in-1’ model of education that consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. This model not only helps students acquire extensive knowledge; it also exerts a positive influence on their character development.

2.     If you are a sports lover, you will be thrilled to learn about the various sports facilities that are available on the beautiful 1-square-kilometre campus. You will find an Olympic-size swimming pool, a football field, squash courts, an archery range, a climbing wall, a fitness room, and a badminton court, to name but a few.

3.     UM has the largest residential college (RC) system in Asia. Each RC is a close-knit residential and learning community inhabited by students of different ages, in different majors, and from different backgrounds. Such a living arrangement not only allows students to achieve well-rounded development, but also helps them expand their networks.

4.     UM internationally recruits outstanding scholars to create a multilingual and multicultural learning environment for students. UM has a faculty team comprised of more than 590 people, over 20 of them are chair professors and distinguished professors who are leaders in their respective areas of expertise. Additionally, UM holds high-quality academic conferences on a regular basis. So far 11 Nobel laureates have given talks at UM.

5.     UM offers more than 130 bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, and other programmes, through its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, and Honours College. English is the main medium of instruction, with some programmes being taught in Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese.

6.     Many academic programmes at UM have received international accreditation, including the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Programme, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Programme, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme, Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering Programme, Bachelor of Science in Accounting Programme with Specialisation in Professional Accountancy, and Bachelor of Science in Accounting Programme with Specialisation in Accounting and Information Systems. UM is also the first higher education institution in Macao to be certified under the latest ISO 9001 and 14001.

7.     UM has a vibrant campus culture. There are more than 100 student organisations on campus for students to choose from based on their interests.

8.     The presence of international students and the partnerships with more than 60 universities around the world combine to offer horizon-broadening experiences for UM students.

9.     In 2016, UM awarded a total of MOP 4 million in scholarships and academic awards to more than 370 outstanding students.

10.  The employment and further studies rates among UM graduates holding a bachelor’s degree have been very good over the past three years. Over 90 per cent of the graduates found a job within three months of graduation, with many of them finding a job even before graduation. What’s more, many graduates were accepted by world-renowned graduate schools, including those at the University of Cambridge, Columbia University, Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
